PAIN MANAGEMENT

We are meant to feel pain.  Healthy pain serves a purpose.  If we touch a hot stove top, pain tells us to remove our hand.  Without this feedback we would suffer more serious bodily injuries.

Even though pain serves a purpose, long term, chronic pain does not.  Obviously, if we can remove the “thorn” that is causing this pain, that is the first choice.  If we cannot find, and remove the source, we need to develop a pain management plan.

Pain falls into a couple of broad categories:

PAIN MANAGEMENT PLANS  may include a number of options:

  • physical therapies
  • psychological therapies
    • Meditation
    • Relaxation techniques
    • Visual imagery, as simple as picturing a peaceful scene, for example
    • Biofeedback, which teaches control over muscle tension, temperature, heart rate and more
  • pain relief medications
  • OTC – Over The Counter or prescription
    • NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), including ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin
    • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
    • Antidepressants, which can improve sleep and alleviate pain
    • Anti-seizure medications, which can be effective in treating pain related to nerve damage or injury
    • Steroids, like dexamethasone and prednisone, to alleviate inflammation and pain
    • Opiods
  • Herbal applications
