BEAUTY IS SKIN DEEP

No matter our facial structure or the color of our hair, healthy skin and hair are BEAUTIFUL.

IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN VERY SIMPLE. There are two basic principles for healthy, beautiful skin; what we put IN our body, & what we put ON our body.

Both are very important. It is as simple as that!

SKIN CARE BASICS

WE HAVE ALLOWED OURSELVES TO BE LED ASTRAY BY ADVERTISERS, pretty packages, artificially flavored, enhanced food and even the medical community. It used to be intuitive and passed down from one generation to the next on how to make simple healthy food. Our crazy lifestyle in the land of 10,000 things makes it hard to focus on what really matters today. We walk into a grocery store and see so many choices. It is hard to know where to begin.

SLOWLY WE ARE BEGINNING TO REMEMBER HOW IMPORTANT  the food we eat is with regard to our eyes, skin, hair and basic health. Even the medical community is getting on board with the fact that most chronic illness can be prevented by simple healthy food.

I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND IT EASIER TO REMEMBER AN IDEA or concept rather than a list of things. Therefore, I am not going to give you recipes, that is just more stuff to maintain. I would like to help you simplify the process by giving you a few simple guidelines that might make it a little easier.

FIRST –

Drink plenty of water

SIMPLE IS BEST – I know it sounds boring, but no flavorings, no coloring nothing. Pay attention to the source.  Municipal water has been treated with chlorine and floride.  Install an RO system or use an activated charcoal filter for the cleanest source of water.

DOESN’T HAVE TO BE BORING – However, you can add a cucumber or lemon slice or even a few berries. Try popping a few berries in the freezer and throwing them into your water like small ice cubes. The point is to keep it simple and to find easy ways to enjoy drinking more water that doesn’t include sugar, caffeine or other additives.

SECOND –

Shop around the outside of the grocery store

This is where all the good stuff lives; healthy fats (omega three oils), fish / lean meats (if you are a meat eater), healthy dairy, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. That is it! There is no secret to health or healthy skin. Only eat the good stuff.  Stay away from food out of a box!

LIMIT SUGARS:  I promised simple, not easy. For me, my biggest stumbling block is sugar. I can do well for a period of time and then I just need a fix. But what I do different now is that instead of being hard on myself, I get back on the horse and back on track as soon as I can. We do not need to be perfect, just make the good stuff the priority.

FRESH IDEAS:  There are many wonderful blogs that show you how to live around the outside of the grocery store; how to season food with fresh herbs, vegetables or fruit. It is amazing how wonderful fresh food can be and how simple it is to make. Find one that speaks to you and enjoy!

SLOW & STEADY: I find it easiest to add one new thing at a time. After that simple addition is part of my day, I add another. Before you know it, you have changed how you prepare food and what you eat.

THIRD –

Don’t put anything on your body that you wouldn’t eat

CHECK INGREDIENTS:  This may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the same thing applies with body care products as does the food we consume. The longer and more complicated the ingredient list; the less likely it is good for us inside or out.

AVOID: chemicals whenever possible. They are not our best option for food and they pose the same risk when applied to our skin. I know this is a broad statement, but I do think there is something to it. If I have a choice between using a light organic oil like almond or apricot kernel with a few drops of lavender essential oil added versus an item that has 42 ingredients and most of them I don’t recognize, I will always choose the simple oil.

INCLUDE:  healthy, organic skin nourishing oils to your beauty routine. This is especially helpful for those of us with dry skin, but it can also be very gentle for those with acne prone skin.
